My Hip Project - 10/17/06

Announcing 2007 AHAH! (A Hip Anniversary Hike)

My 9 week list of exercises - probably stick to these for some time now...

If you really want to hear the details, you can read my journal. Here's an excerpt (which also explains why I'm having this at age 36).
9/18/06 – t-minus 1 month… Insurance approval through. Scheduled with local internist 10/4 and have appointments pre-op in LA. Surgery scheduled for 10/17 at 10:30am. Plan to spend 10/15-10/20 in LA and drive back with Dad. Getting jittery and wondering (as many do) if it really is time. I keep reminding myself of the gradual decline, trouble putting on socks, trouble sleeping etc. etc. [Pain started way back before I can remember – maybe 1990(?), no soccer started about 2001, no running 2004, no hikes with backpack 2004, no squash 2005, no golf 2006, no biking 2006, just swimming now] It will be worth it. Hard struggle with the feeling of mortality that comes with losing an original piece of equipment that wore out. Starting to look at the rest of my body with more care/reverence. Thinking about which ‘aids’ I will need post-op – sock helper, toilet helper, etc. Wondering if I want general or local anesthetic. The mailing list can sometimes give you too much information to ponder – but in general it has been a big, big help. Surgery being done by Dr. Amstutz ( www.jri-oh.com ) – renown in the community and co-developer of the prostheses.

Before - what my right hip looks like. Normal. Spacing between ball/cup.

Before - my left hip - bone on bone in places. Spurs, cysts. It is inevitable.

The implant - www.wmt.com
..and a cool video of the ball and socket
After - new cup and ball. Conserve + from Wright Medical. Surgery done by Dr. Harlan Amstutz. This is my hip - taken 4 weeks post-op.

Below is the 'Total' Hip equivalent of the same implant (Big Femoral Head). In the future, the hip can be 'revised' using the same acetabular cup component - therefore requiring (in principle) work only on the femoral side. Clearly you can see the difference on the femoral side of the 'total' hip vs. resurfacing. Both are really total hip replacements - but the resurfacing approach saves bone and maintains the original mechanics of the joint better.

Goal Tracker

Walking without cane done Week 7 - trusting it for long periods around the house at Week 9.
Walking without a limp est. Week 10 .. about 1 week behind?? - I did a truly limp-free walk without cane Week 12.
Tying Shoes and/or putting on sock without 'help' est. Week 11-12 - barely tied shoes on left at Week 9 - about same ROM as before. Barely got sock on using only my hands at the gym... I must have looked funny on the floor contorted... but I did it and met my goal at Week 12.
First off-road hike of >3mi. est. Week 11-12 - did this at 4 months - mainly because I didn't have much time! When I was on my way back on the hike I was very cheerful.
First morning where I didn't think of hip first est. Week 20
First Golf Game - 18 holes est Week 20
First time I feel like I can get into my 4x4 pickup (with no step) and push the clutch with op. leg est Week 20 - already doing this at Week 9. Good exercise actually.
First bike ride on the road est. 5mo.
First bike ride on dirt est. 6mo.
First time I can touch my nose to my left knee... est 9mo.
First backpack hike of >10mi. est. 9mo.
