Formed 49,000 years ago by the impact of an iron meteorite about the size of a large house, this northern Arizona landmark is amazing in its moonscape resemblance. Apollo astronauts trained here to learn to recognize the various types of rocks found around impact craters and the effects of meteorite impact. The crater is 3/4 of a mile across and over 500 ft. deep. Flagstaff, Arizona is about
35 miles to the west near the mountains above the parking lot in this 360
degree panorama. |
